Can My Mechanic Fix The DPF Problem?

February 9, 2021

Unfortunately, if your mechanic doesn’t have specialised equipment, knowledge or believe in outsourcing the closest thing they can do to try and rectify your DPF issue is force SERVICE DPF REGENERATION BURNS via a diagnostic scan tool or install new replacement parts.

If any part of an exhaust after-treatment system has reached a level of restriction where a limp home mode, engine light and DPF light is activated more than likely the only way to properly rectify the issue is to remove the component and service off vehicle with specific equipment.

Continually forcing burns will cause damage to the components of the exhaust including the filter, resulting in what was once a serviceable unit having to be replaced with a new DPF.

On a $$$$ comparison roughly a $1200 bill to fully rectify the issue just turned into a $5000+ bill because a workshop without the correct equipment or knowledge failed to seek advice on the customers behalf.

SOME POINTS TO REMEMBER:

90% of the time a blocked after-treatment system such as the DPF can be serviced and cleaned if caught early and managed correctly.

  • Continually getting forced regenerations conducted via a scan tool will damage the unit beyond repair.
  • No magic fuel additive will unblock a restricted DPF causing engine lights. Quality proven additives can however assist in the prevention of soot particles prolonging the life of the system.
  • On vehicle spray cleaners do not properly derestrict the DPF. If heavily blocked they don’t work at all, if partially restricted they may buy you some time but by no means are properly rectifying the issue.
  • Cost to service the DPF off vehicle including removal and re-installation roughly costs $1200. Replacing with a new filter can start at $2000+ and in some cases can exceed 5 figures.

-Ignoring the issue is putting other engine components such as TURBO CHARGERS under immense stress that will lead to engine failure.

- Not all workshops are equipped to deal with issues arising in the exhaust after treatment systems.  We recommend seeking a second opinion before committing to the repair work to ensure your receiving the correct info and won’t spend more than needed.

We wrote this blog because nothing upsets us more than a customer up for a huge repair bill at no fault of their own because the issue was initially mismanaged.
